Urban living is an attraction to many people seeking a diverse environment bustling with activities and in close proximity to restaurants, boutiques, theaters and parks...and for Sarasota, the bonus of a bayfront. Downtown Sarasota is, today, undergoing a billion-dollar boom in construction. New condominium buildings and apartments either completed, underway, or planned will bring more than 4,200 new residences to Sarasota's greater downtown area this year and next year. This eruption of urban growth also includes new office and retail spaces, as well as hotels. Sarasota, ground zero for the worst of the Great Recession according to some experts, is now seeing a post-recession surge of building fueled by pent-up demand and confidence in the future.
In 2016, the city processed $442 million worth of permits. These new residential buildings will join a host of older properties downtown.
