A Free Ride On Siesta Key Breeze
Someone came up with a brilliant idea to offer a free trolley service on Siesta Key this past spring and it has really taken off since that time. It is totally free and services the entire island, so a visitor or resident can be at Turtle Beach, the southern tip of Siesta Key, get on the trolley and take it back to Siesta Key Village's shops, restaurants, cafes, and bars. And then take it back to Turtle Beach later in the day or evening. After all, many of us are here loving the lifestyle and having a world renowned beach, on island time, within minutes of our homes.
The trolley service is from SCAT ~ the Sarasota County Area Transit ~ and runs daily from 8 am to midnight. There are regular stops but people can flag down the trolley as well. The idea was generated to help reduce traffic on the key, a favorite beach destination of locals as well as tourists, and open parking spaces on the island. SCAT used state grant money to start the pilot program and from the first week, there were over 1,000 riders a day, twice as many as expected.
It hasn't taken long for the popularity of the Breeze to soar. There's air conditioning in the front and open air seats in the back of the trolley. Many riders have praised it saying that it's more like sight-seeing and it brings more of an island feel, as riders enjoy their journey. And it makes its own breeze along the way....we love it!
