May The Force Be With You!

I read a few months ago an article on Active Rain posted by Myrl Jeffcoat, a licensed agent in California.  I loved the article and will share the best points with you.  With humor and imagination, Myrl reminded us of 7 things that empower home buyers and help alleviate trauma,  stress and worry.  Each time a property is purchased, it's a new and unique experience for the home buyer{s}.  And while we trust that it will end happily for all involved, sometimes things or people get in the way.  Here are her 7 things that will empower you as you enter the home buying process ~ May the Force Be With YOU!

Purchasing a "home" is often the single largest investment most individuals make in their lifetime. It's an emotional decision too and may be a roller coaster ride, so be sure to select a real estate professional who will be a force standing by you, who is a good fit for you, who is "simpatico", but also knowledgeable about the market.  There is no substitute for experience when you are making this kind of investment.

Siesta Key Beach No. 1 Again!

For the second time in seven years, Siesta Key Beach in Sarasota earned the equivalent of an environmental Oscar: the No. 1 Beach in America.
The beautiful stretch of white sand-known the world over for its glittering white quartz crystals-previously won the award from Stephen "Dr. Beach" Leatherman in 2011, a distinction that likely drew thousands of tourists to the region who otherwise might not have visited Sarasota County and the broader region. Dr. Beach praised Siesta Key for $21 million in renovations that improved the beach experience. Leatherman specifically complimented the beach for its expanded parking and bus service that brings visitors to the beach for free. Siesta Key Beach has also been ranked No. 1 by TripAdvisor in 2015 and 2017.
Leatherman's beach ratings consists of 50 criteria. He said the he goes through the entire checklist to create a score out of 250. This year, Siesta Key Beach scored 238.
On top of the 50 criteria, including beach shape, water temperature and wildlife, Leatherman said he gives extra points for beaches that prohibit smoking. The entire list can be found on his website,
Dr. Beach said one of his favorite features of Siesta Beach is the sand. Unlike most Florida... read article

Top 8 Reasons To Live In Sarasota!

Some call Sarasota a hidden gem on Florida's gulf coast.  We discovered it in 1997 after searching up and down the west coast of Florida, looking for a place to call home.  What we found is a city where lush and bountiful, natural beauty meets a vibrant city immersed in a history and tradition of cultural, educational and artistic appreciation.  There are many reasons to move to and live in Sarasota, but here are our top 8:

Beautiful Beaches!  Our award-winning Siesta Key beach, named #1 beach in the country many times, is truly unique.  Its pure white sand ~ feeling and looking like sugar ~ is a result of nature working its wonders on quartz and bringing it to the shores of Siesta Key.  It is amazing.  Cool to the touch even in the middle of summer, hard enough to walk briskly or ride a is perfection for most beachgoers.  The beaches of Lido Key offer a great alternative to Siesta's with ample parking, a concessions for the hungry and St. Armand's Circle nearby for after beach cocktails or a casual, al fresco dinner.  From the tip of Anna Maria... read article

Lakewood Ranch Expands Into Sarasota ~ New Construction Coming

[caption id="attachment_1430" align="alignnone" width="300"] Waterside Taking Shape in New Section of Lakewood Ranch. {Artist's Rendering Courtesy of YourObserver}.[/caption]

The southernmost part of Lakewood Ranch opened with construction activity as 2017 made its debut with construction equipment poised to move piles of dirt and stone for Waterside, the only part of Lakewood Ranch that will be in Sarasota county.  By summer, industry spokesmen say that Waterside with begin to take on a very different look with sparkling lakes and new lawns surrounding newly constructed homes and town homes.

The first phase of residential construction includes 775 properties, primarily single-family homes with town homes in two parcels.  Waterside's name will is definitely appropriate with nearly every homesite listed as waterfront property.  National builders, Homes by Towne and the Pulte Group, will be the development's first builders.  Homes by Towne has not yet announced prices for its Lakehouse Cove neighborhood but models are expected to open in the fall.  Model homes for Pulte and pre-sales are expected to begin soon.  Pulte's neighborhood, Shoreview, will have homes starting in the $500s and a grand opening is expected to be held in late fall.

Newly constructed apartments are about to... read article

New MTV Reality Show Being Filmed On Siesta Key In Sarasota

Camera crews are filming a new reality TV show about wealthy local college students home for the summer at America's No. 1 beach.
Details about the show, which premieres in July and is known as "Siesta Key" are minimal. A brief commercial ran Sunday during the MTV Movie & TV Awards, giving a nod to another of the network's reality shows, "The Hills."
"From The Hills to the Beach," it said as a couple kissed on the screen. "Welcome to Siesta Key." The show could shape the way millions of viewers see Southwest Florida, and Virginia Haley, president of Visit Sarasota County, is hopeful it's an accurate portrayal.
Reportedly, Siesta Key will be told through the eyes of its young locals, and that's an important story to tell, said Beth Owen Cipielewski, co-owner of Siesta Key Oyster Bar and president of the Sarasota-Manatee Originals local restaurant group. So often, the area is portrayed as a retirement community. There's more to Siesta Key than that, and this is an amplified way for the younger generation to see it. The show also could help educate people about the area. There's a ton of young, local talent in Southwest Florida that may finally get some well-deserved... read article

More New Construction In Sarasota, Maybe The Best!

[caption id="attachment_1421" align="alignnone" width="300"] Dramatic dining room with amazing windows.[/caption]

Wow, there's a new builder in town and we love what we saw yesterday!  The Kolter Group, currently building a few condominium residences in downtown Sarasota, just opened a new community of single family homes in Sarasota called "Artistry". As Realtors and as consumers, we were so impressed with their "fresh" approach to the floor plans, the elevations of the homes, the details/options available, the professional decorating of the models...but we also saw unusual and new items in their construction.  Bronze windows that were exceptionally large, higher ceilings of 11 and 12 feet standard, transom windows over sliding glass doors bringing in our beautiful light here in southwest Florida...we were very impressed.  The company hails from West Palm Beach and the approach to building is noticably and fresh.

[caption id="attachment_1425" align="alignnone" width="300"] Entrance to Artistry.[/caption]

The community's lifestyle center is well under construction and will provide residents with a fitness center {free weight, strength & cardio training center as well as a multi-purpose fitness room}, sports courts, resort-style heated pool with lap lanes and beach entry,... read article

Iverson's Furniture Celebrates 60th Year In Sarasota

Iverson's furniture opened 60 years ago with a building and a sign that said "consignment."
The actual furniture followed slowly over time. Today, the store on Bee Ridge Road just east of U.S. 41 is a hub for high-end, used homewares, but in 1957 it was just a dream for northern transplants Hal and Cheryl Iverson. Like so many of Sarasota's newcomers, the Minnesota couple had vacationed in the area and fallen in love with the warm weather and sugary beaches. They borrowed $3,000 from a family member, loaded up a U-Haul and drove south with their three small children and the family dog. That seed money was the foundation for one of the most long-lived family- owned businesses in Sarasota.
Six decades later, they're not packing up anytime soon.
Today, Barry Wigglesworth, the Iverson' grandson, manages the store and its collection. They often take on whole house loads of furniture, and his team sorts through what they can sell and what needs to be donated. They've picked up bizarre treasures such as a pair of wooden Civil War era dice and a Russian lampshade worth thousands of dollars, but they clean out everything down to the contents of refrigerators. The overall goal... read article

Restoration, Renovation And Renewal In Sarasota ~ Architectural Gems

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  And when considering Sarasota architecture, minds can be stretched thin, delving into foggy subject matter and coming up with no love for the subject at hand.  Architects strive hard to create buildings that will remain memorable and perhaps important and when successful, are the makers of buildings that rise above others in their very essence. The statement a home, condominium, church, school, or commercial building makes in its surrounding environment and their symbiotic relationship is interesting to Larry and myself. We have always shared a common bond in appreciating historical buildings and homes.  They resonate with us and we imagine many restored or renovated, moving onto a continuing life.

One of the first experiences we shared together was on a trip to South Beach in the early 90s.  What we found was a mix of dilapidated Art Deco buildings with one beautifully renovated one sprinkled here and there.  We were fascinated by the architecture and became more so as South Beach began an exciting era of renovating and restoring these buildings.  The district was labeled "historical" by the city of Miami Beach and while buildings could be completely gutted, they could not be torn... read article
